TEACHING EXPERIENCE

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

Interest deepens as creativity manifests. Tactile learning is beneficial to all students. Bringing tactile learning into the classroom through experiential learning converts the theoretical into the practical.

Experiential learning starts with developing close relationships with businesses in the area. Over time, the respect grows into a strong partnership. The company becomes excited each year at the prospect of gaining new insights and ideas to grow and develop its business with the assistance of young minds.

Students value the experience. Working with local businesses transitions their thinking from theoretical to practical. They learn how to apply the foundational knowledge to actual business situations as they solve business problems.

Nothing is more satisfying than witnessing that light bulb moment, such as when developing strategic tools in a marketing management class. After a briefing and a visit to a client, like Heidelberg Bread or Street Corner Urban Market, the entire class works together to craft mission and vision statements. Students gain a deeper understanding of the valuable role strategic assets and how they guide the day-to-day operations and growth of a company.

My Teaching Philosophy

My students are diverse, coming from different backgrounds, geographic areas, and socioeconomic conditions. By practicing conscious awareness, I am able to deliver student-centered learning that recognizes these individual differences and creates an enhanced learning environment.

My intent is to set up students for success. Whenever possible, I grade for mastery. While that takes more time, performance increases when students receive clear direction, feedback, and the opportunity to revise their work. Engaged students develop a growth mindset, and they improve as individuals, not as a class.

When we would do assignments and be given feedback to go back and adjust our work, I think it really helped everyone and made sure we did it right.
